Pool decks in Tucson take more abuse than any other surface on a property. Full sun most of the year, constant wetting and drying, chlorinated splash out, hard water that leaves deposits, and a surface people cross barefoot at the hottest part of the day. It is not the right answer for all of them. An overlay is a thin surface treatment. It follows what is underneath. If the slab beneath has structural cracking, if sections have heaved or settled relative to each other, or if the concrete is delaminating, a coating will telegraph every one of those problems within a season or two. Working out honestly which situation you are in is the first part of this job, and the part where a lot of money gets wasted in this market.

Preparation and repair
Cleaning, profiling the surface so the overlay actually bonds, routing and filling cracks, and repairing spalled areas. Preparation is most of the labour and it is the reason a cheap resurfacing quote is cheap.
Overlay application
Textured overlay applied to the specified thickness in the colour agreed, worked around coping, drains, steps and any obstacles, and finished with a texture appropriate to a wet barefoot surface.
Joints, sealing and reinstatement
Existing control joints honoured through the new surface rather than coated over, sealing where the product calls for it, and furniture and equipment reinstated.

Why bring us in
We will tell you when not to resurface. An overlay on a structurally failing deck buys a year or two and then the same cracks reappear in a new colour. Because we also build paver decks and pour concrete, we have no incentive to sell you a coating that will not hold.
We treat preparation as the job. Profiling, crack routing and repair take most of the time on a resurfacing project, and they are what a bonded overlay depends on. A crew that shows up and starts spraying on day one is skipping the part you are actually paying for.
And we choose colour for temperature, not just appearance. On a pool deck in this climate, how hot the surface gets is a functional specification. A dark colour on a large unshaded deck will be a mistake you notice every July.

Can you resurface a pool deck?
Usually yes, provided the slab underneath is structurally sound and the surface can be prepared to take a bond. A textured overlay is a genuine solution rather than a cosmetic patch, and on a sound deck it will last well. Where the concrete has structural cracking, heaving between sections, or is delaminating, resurfacing is not the right answer and we will say so.
What is the average cost of resurfacing a pool deck?
The cost is driven by preparation and repair rather than by the coating. A clean, sound deck with minimal cracking is far cheaper per square foot than one that needs extensive routing, filling and spall repair. Deck shape and the number of obstacles also matter, since curved decks with steps and multiple edges are slow work.
What is the cheapest way to resurface a pool deck?
The cheapest genuine option is a thin textured overlay on a deck that needs little repair. Anything cheaper than that is usually a paint or a coating applied over inadequate preparation, and that is the fastest route to paying twice. If budget is the constraint, resurfacing just the high traffic area rather than the entire deck is a more honest saving than cutting preparation.
What is the best pool deck resurfacing material?
For this climate, a light coloured cementitious textured overlay is the usual right answer: it runs cooler than dark surfaces, it gives grip when wet, and it bonds well to a prepared slab.
