Paver Driveways in Tucson
Deeper base, thicker paver, restrained edges. A driveway carries loads a patio never sees, and it has to be built for them from the subgrade up.
- Vehicle rated base depth, not patio depth
- 60mm minimum paver thickness on drives
- Herringbone in the wheel path for interlock
- Apron and street tie in detailed properly
[ 01 ]The part you cannot see
A driveway is not a thick patio
The difference between a patio and a driveway is not the paver, it is everything underneath. A patio carries people and furniture. A driveway carries a vehicle that concentrates its whole weight into four contact patches, then moves those patches back and forth over the same two lines every day, and occasionally hosts a delivery truck or a concrete truck that weighs several times what your car does.
That repeated point loading finds every weakness in a base. Where the base is thin, the wheel path develops two shallow ruts. Where the edge is unrestrained, the outer courses migrate sideways and the joints fan open. Where the apron meets the street, a driveway built to the wrong level either scrapes bumpers or lets street runoff track straight up onto the property.
None of those are paver failures. All of them are specification failures, and they are decided before anything is delivered.
[ 02 ]Scope
What we build
Full driveway replacement
Taking out the existing concrete or asphalt, correcting the subgrade, and building a paver drive to vehicle specification from scratch. This is the usual job on 1960s and 1970s midtown lots where the original slab has cracked across its width.
Driveway extensions and parking pads
Widening a drive for a second vehicle, adding a turnaround, or building a pad for a trailer or RV. Extra width has to be built to the same standard as the original run, because vehicles do not respect the joint between them.
Driveway aprons and street tie ins
The section from the property line to the street, which has its own requirements and often its own permit. Levels here decide whether water runs off your property or onto it.
[ 03 ]In every scope
What is included
Demolition and haul away
Breaking out and removing existing concrete or asphalt, including the spoil. Removal is a real cost line on a driveway and we show it separately rather than folding it into a single number.
Subgrade and vehicle base
Excavation to a depth set by the loading and the ground, subgrade compaction, then aggregate base placed and compacted in lifts to a driveway specification rather than a patio one.
Laying pattern and cutting
Herringbone through the wheel paths, because the interlock is what stops the field creeping under braking and turning. Border courses cut on a saw and a soldier course along the edges.
Edge restraint and commissioning
Heavy duty restraint spiked along both edges, joint sand swept and settled, the field compacted with a protective pad, then the drive washed down and left ready to use.

[ 04 ]How it runs
How the build runs
- 01
Site visit and levels
We check the fall from the garage to the street, the height of the existing apron, and how water currently moves across the frontage. Getting the levels wrong on a driveway is expensive to fix.
- 02
Loading and specification
What actually parks here matters. A daily driver, a dual wheel truck and an RV are three different base specifications and we quote the one you need rather than the cheapest one that will pass on the day.
- 03
Fixed quote
Itemised, with demolition, haul away, base depth and paver spec listed separately so the number can be compared honestly against other quotes.
- 04
Permits and utilities
Blue stake locates before we dig, and where the apron or the street tie in needs approval we handle the submittal.
- 05
Build
Demolition, excavation, subgrade compaction, base in lifts, screed, lay, cut, restrain, sand, compact. You will normally have partial access through most of the build and we plan the sequence around that.
- 06
Walkthrough and driving
We walk it with you, explain the short settling in period, and leave joint sand for topping up after the first season.
[ 05 ]Why us
Why build with us
Most driveway quotes in this market do not state a base depth, which means you are comparing prices without knowing what you are buying. Ours does, and we will explain why the number is what it is for your ground.
We also do not treat a driveway as a bigger patio. The paver thickness, the laying pattern through the wheel path and the edge restraint spec are all different, and a crew that builds patios all week will often use patio details out of habit. The result looks correct for eighteen months.
And the apron gets designed rather than improvised. That transition is where the driveway meets the public right of way, where levels are least forgiving, and where a badly finished job is most visible from the street.

[ 06 ]Questions
Paver driveway questions
Is paver driveway cheaper than concrete?
Up front, no. Pavers cost more to install than a plain poured driveway of the same size, mostly in labour. Where the comparison turns is over time: a cracked concrete driveway is replaced, while a settled paver driveway is lifted, corrected and relaid using the same pavers. Whether that matters to you depends on how long you intend to stay.
How much does a 20x20 paver driveway cost?
On a driveway the dominant costs are demolition and haul away of whatever is there now, the extra base depth vehicle loading requires, and the number of cuts the shape demands. Two 400 square foot driveways can differ substantially on those three lines alone.
How much does it cost to pave a 2000 sq ft driveway?
Large driveways get slightly better per square foot pricing on labour and material handling, but they also usually involve more demolition and often a turning area that needs the same base as the main run. Ask for the price to be broken into demolition, base and surface so you can see where it went.
What are the disadvantages of a paver driveway?
Higher initial cost, joint sand that needs topping up in the first year or two, and the possibility of weeds if the joints are neglected. A poorly built one can also rut in the wheel path, though that is a base failure rather than a characteristic of pavers.
Does a paver driveway increase home value?
Kerb appeal is the first thing a buyer sees and a cracked, stained or patched driveway reads as deferred maintenance across the whole property. A well built paver drive presents well, though the honest position is that condition and presentation move a sale more reliably than the material itself does.
Does paving your driveway increase property taxes?
Assessment practice varies and we are not the right people to advise on it. What we can tell you is that any permitted work creates a record, and if the tax position matters to your decision the Pima County Assessor is the source to ask rather than a contractor.
How much is 1000 square feet of pavers?
The pavers themselves are usually a minority of a driveway price. Asking what the material costs per square foot will not get you close to the installed number, because excavation, base, demolition and labour make up most of it. Ask for the installed price with the base spec stated.
