A lawn that does not need the one thing Tucson does not have
Turf earns its place here for a simple reason. A real lawn in this climate needs water it should not be using, and it still looks poor from June through August unless you overwater it. Synthetic turf stays green through all of it, needs no mowing, and takes a dog better than grass does after the first month of use.
The trade offs are real and we would rather state them than have you discover them. Turf gets hot in direct sun, hotter than the air, and a large unshaded turf area in July is not a comfortable surface to walk on barefoot in the afternoon. It is a manufactured product with a finite life. And a badly installed turf lawn looks obviously wrong in a way that a badly installed patio does not, because the eye knows what grass is supposed to look like.
Nearly all of that comes down to the same place everything else in this trade does: the base. Turf laid over a compacted, free draining base with correctly anchored edges and properly joined seams looks convincing and drains after a storm. Turf rolled onto dirt develops low spots, holds water, shows every seam, and starts lifting at the edges within a year.

Back yard lawn areas
The most common install: a defined panel of turf as the soft surface in a yard that is otherwise pavers, DG and planting. Sized and shaped so it reads as a designed element rather than as leftover space.
Pet areas and dog runs
A different specification. Free draining base, a pet appropriate infill, and a plan for how the area gets rinsed. Dogs are the single biggest factor in whether a turf lawn is still pleasant in year three.
Front yards and HOA compliant installs
Front yard turf where the community allows it, which is a real question in parts of Oro Valley, Green Valley and Marana. We check the rules and handle the submittal rather than laying it and hoping.

What is included
Excavation and drainage base
Existing surface removed to depth, subgrade compacted, then a free draining aggregate base placed and compacted. On tight or low lying areas this is also where any additional drainage gets built in.
Turf, seams and shaping
Turf laid with the blade direction consistent across the whole area, which is what stops seams from showing, then seams joined and secured properly. Cuts shaped to the borders rather than trimmed roughly and hidden under a border.
Anchoring and edges
Perimeter anchored into base or held by a hard edge such as paver, curbing or a wall, so the turf cannot lift, curl or shrink back at the corners.
Infill and brushing
Infill spread to the specified rate and brushed into the blades so they stand up and the surface behaves like a lawn rather than a carpet. Pet installations get an infill chosen for odour management.

Why build with us
We build the base like it is a patio, because it is. The largest single quality difference between turf installations in this market is what is underneath, and it is completely invisible on handover day.
We are honest about heat. Turf in full afternoon sun in July is hot underfoot. If the area you want to cover has no shade at all, we will tell you that before you buy it, and we will usually suggest looking at shade in the same conversation rather than after you are disappointed.
And we will tell you when turf is the wrong call. A heavily shaded, permanently damp side yard, or an area that has to take vehicle traffic, are both better served by something else. We build the alternatives, so there is no reason for us to push turf where it does not belong.

Artificial turf questions
What is the average cost of installing artificial turf?
The turf product itself varies widely in price by density and blade specification, and the excavation and base work underneath is a large share of the installed cost. Small awkward areas cost more per square foot than large simple ones because the base work and the waste do not scale down.
What is the downside to artificial turf?
It gets hot in direct sun, considerably hotter than the air temperature. It has a finite life and eventually needs replacing. It does not support insects or soil life the way a planted area does. And it needs occasional rinsing and brushing, particularly where dogs use it, which is less maintenance than a lawn but is not zero.
Why are people getting rid of artificial grass?
The two most common reasons we hear are heat and a poor original installation. Turf laid over an inadequate base develops low spots, holds water and shows its seams, and once that has happened it cannot be fixed from the top. The heat complaint is usually about a large unshaded area in full afternoon sun, which is a design problem more than a product one.
Can weeds grow through artificial grass?
Rarely up through the backing, but readily in the infill from windblown seed, and around the perimeter where turf meets a border. A properly built base and clean edges make it uncommon and easy to manage. Weeds appearing in the middle of a turf area usually mean debris has been allowed to build up in the infill.
What kills artificial grass?
Heat is the main threat, specifically concentrated heat. Reflected sunlight from a low emissivity window can melt blades in a surprisingly small, sharply defined patch. So can a barbecue, a fire pit, a dropped cigarette or a portable heater. Turf is not flammable in the way grass is, but the fibres will deform permanently well below the temperature you might expect.
What should you not do to artificial grass?
Do not put a fire pit or grill on it or immediately beside it, do not park a vehicle on it unless it was built for that, do not use harsh solvents on it, and do not let debris build up in the infill. Beyond that it is genuinely low maintenance, which is most of why people install it.
What is the most natural looking artificial grass?
The products that look most convincing use a mix of blade colours including a brown or tan thatch layer, varied blade shapes, and a moderate rather than extreme density. Bright uniform green with very high density reads as artificial instantly. Look at samples outdoors in real sunlight, never on a screen or under shop lighting.
